More time to spend having fun out on the slopes! The Whitecap Mountains have state-of-the-art snowmaking, yet there's nothing quite like natural snow and no resort in Wisconsin comes close! On the western front of the Lake Superior Snow Belt, the annual snowfall tops 200 inches prompting Powder Magazine to call these mountains ‘a hidden powder haven’. The lift per skier ratio is higher than other mountains and you won’t have to worry about waiting around in long lift lines at Whitecap. When considering the total terrain of the mountains, the Polar Bear Bowl, the Alpine Village, Weber Lake and the huge variety of lodging and accommodations on the mountains, this truly is Wisconsin's largest ski resort. Expert skiers and beginners alike will be impressed with the quality of the terrain and challenged from top to bottom. 43 downhill runs spread over these sprawling mountains offer plenty of skiing for everybody at every skill level. The three peaks of the Thunderhead and Eagles Nest mountains make up The Whitecap Mountains Ski Resort. The peaks are on the western side of the Lake Superior Snow Belt with breathtaking mountaintop views of the big lake and the Apostle Islands more than 1,000 feet below. It’s best at night, still somewhat notorious but safe to stroll.More than 200 inches of pure, natural snow falls upon The Whitecap Mountains on average each year. Take a stroll down Hurley’s historic Silver Street, once the hangout for notorious gangsters like Al Capone, Baby Face Nelson, and Dillinger. Each punch is good for a daily lift ticket, and the card is transferable. The $275 Decimal Pass Premium is a 10 punch card with no blackout dates. An easier mile-long run around the outer portion of Eagle Nest offers a great cruising run with some nice S turns. Eagle’s Nest Mountain offers the toughest runs western-like, boulder-laden, mostly black and double-black narrow runs. New this season on Thunderhead’s north face will be glade runs heading down to Weber Lake. Tree-lined cruisers twist and turn down to Weber Lake and the south face is home to a huge expanse of beginner terrain. Three sides of Thunderhead Mountain offer a nice collection of trails. The backside trails connect to the rest of the ski area. Whitecap Mountain’s front side offers novice and intermediate slopes. Over 40 trails spill off three mountain peaks, some to the edge of scenic Weber Lake. There are also mountain chalets and condos available. The Whitecap Mountain Hotel has an indoor swimming pool, hydro spa, multilevel suites, and micro-kitchen units. Off property check out in nearby Hurley the popular Liberty Bell Chalet for Italian and Iron Nugget for steak. Don’t miss a stop at the Wine Hut, an 1880’s logger’s cabin at the bottom of Thunderhead Mountain on Weber Lake. Look for more improvements over the next few years as Whitecap continues to rebuild under the new ownership that had just taken over last season. The resort has been busy rebuilding and will be fully functional this season with a new rental and ticket building, and the hotel has a new dining and bar area to serve patrons. The resort’s day lodge with the clock tower and Swiss motif went up in flames last January, but they were able to stay open. Whitecap Mountains is tucked next to Weber Lake in northern Wisconsin’s rugged Ponokee Mountain range. Whitecap Mountains slopes heading down to the village.
